Unspooling is letting what is inside you unwind,
Loosening the tight spool of your fearful heart,
Unfurling it into the world
As art, as emotion, as song, dance, or laughter.
Unspooling makes more of you available
To stitch up the world’s wounds,
To embellish and repair, to connect and strengthen
The many-colored quilt pieces of patchy existence.
Laura Sandage is a musician, writer, and teacher living in Davis, California. Unspooling is intended as a ledger of creative undertakings, a travelog of slow growth, a lute to accompany yearning-songs old and new, and a forest glade for the dancing, fencing, or comedy of unspooling spirits.
I love your writing. You keep inspiring me. Go go go. Bring me more!
More coming, Julie!
Laura, have you ever been part of a writers’ group? I want to write but can’t seem to get started (or can’t get inspired ?). Would like to meet regularly with a group (even 1 or 2 people) to write “stream of consciousness” style – whatever comes into your head. Any ideas?
Natalie Goldberg is my hero RE/ free-writing, but I feel I’m not creative enough. Just gotta practice.
There is a class like that at the Davis Art Center currently on Tuesday mornings. I have a couple writing group buddies who are in that class and like it. I have taught classes/led groups like that myself, and that is how I wound up with the writing group I have been in for the last 6 years or so. We used to lead a once a month drop in group at the Avid Reader.
